I just found your website and was thrilled to see you found this book. I purchased this book NEW (yes all those years ago) and taught myself to crochet while pregnant with my son. The first thing I made was a baby afghan for him and I’ve kept it all these years. He just turned 32 in October! I still reference this book from time to time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Thanks so much Michelle for the pattern. I have made 10 hats, each in similar colors for winter to give to mly friends for Christmas presents. They all raved over the hat when they saw it on me, so I thought I would make it for each of them as gifts. Thanks for being so nice and sharing your pattern.

Thank you, Tink! It does work up pretty nicely, and it’s always good to have a refresher on how to do some of the stitches – for the longest time I was only single crochet and slip stitches, kind of ignoring the triples. Plus, it’s nice to have another scarf!

I just maid the cloche hat. I tried using an H hook at first but the gauge was too small and tight so I finally used a J. The hat came out large, which fit me but I really want to make hats for cancer patients so maybe the acrylic yarn I used was wrong? I don’t want to use wool because a lot of people can’t handle wool next to their skin. I’m not very experienced with yarn terms, like worsted. I want a soft yarn for this and would appreciate any suggestions about yarn and if you know of any other simple crochet hat patterns. I have a lot of time on my hands these days, as I’m also a cancer patient, but my chemo doesn’t cause loss of hair. I’d just like to start giving back to other patients. Thanks for your time.

love this pattern have you a pattern for a cloche hat for a child or adult that you would remove from the head, turn it around, and use it as a purse by pulling the ribbon ties tight? would like to make for greatgrandchildren 3 yrs and up but on a limited income cannot afford the 35$ for one??thanx and keep me in mind

Because even if it is a hobby, it’s not *fair* to yourself or your time to only charge a small amount. When someone offers me money for a knitted or crocheted item (that I haven’t already made…), I consider that to be a business proposition and when the amount that they quote doesn’t even cover all the yarn (let alone my time!), I wouldn’t even consider saying yes.

If it’s made as a gift, of course you’re not going to sell it (that defeats the purpose) but a someone who crafts, I do get a lot “requests” for items, to which I start doing a breakdown for them (i.e. cost of yarn, approximate number of hours * cost of labour).

And besides, if you only sell something for the cost of materials, you’re only making back the money you spent – not the time you spent making something. If it takes you 100 hours to make an afghan and $100 in materials, you would have ‘earned’ $100 (for materials) and absolutely nothing for this 100-hour commissioned afghan. That hardly seems fair, now does it? You won’t have extra money to buy *extra* yarn, let alone the expenses of needing to pay for your lighting, food, etc. during the time you were knitting.

This hat pattern (closhe) is so pretty. It works up fast and is so easy. I have made two so far and they are lovely. I worked the “ribbon” right into the pattern with white fizzy yarn for a little dressier effect on one. Thank you so much for letting us have this pattern.

When I knit cables I try to put at least two columns of purl stitches on either side of the cable (gives it definition)…and I also don’t use cable needles. I just hold the cable-stitches with my fingers as I knit around them. It’s a lot easier than fumbling with cable needles, in my experience.
