This week (I started on Sunday, August 30th and finished Thursday, September 3rd) I crocheted a dozen cupcakes from BitterSweet’s Quick Cupcakes pattern. Today was my last day at work for the summer so I decided to make parting gifts. Now, my sister Jenny issued me a challenge: to make each cupcake unique in colour combination. I had to only use what we had in our house (thank goodness for stockpiling during yarn sales at the crafts store…), although buying additional stuffing was permitted (… how on earth can you have cupcakes without the stuffing?).

This is definitely a pattern that I will consider using again, the name certainly doesn’t lie as it works up fast (I worked on them between 1-2 hours per day from Sunday to Thursday and got a dozen done).

All my coworkers loved them and some even asked if I bought them! They also thought it’d take hours for each one and were all very pleased with how cute they were. Granted, most of them commented on how they now have a super-cute stress ball at their desk (meep!) but overall, they all loved their new cupcakes, which I was really happy about.

The Birthday bear hat was made for my friend’s birthday present. It’s crocheted in brown acrylic yarn for ease of washing (I avoid using 100% natural fibre yarns for gifts, especially since I know most people will toss things into the washing machines and I want to avoid things shrinking down several sizes). I made up the pattern myself. The ears are double layered to help with keeping their shape. They look a little wonky in the photos (the ear on the right looks a little lopsided). This is because my model’s head is not the same shape as a human head, so it doesn’t fill out the hat perfectly – but they’re both non-wonky and stay perfectly (… when on a person’s head).

My friend Charlene was having a birthday, so I wanted to make her something. I found this pattern a while ago, but never had the time to make it (and well, with summer, all I really have is time).

The pattern is called “Beanie Brim Cap” by Hannah Levine. The pattern is available for free and you can find it at Ravelry.com.

In the photos, it’s being modeled by one of my teddy bears (Elijah) and the keyboard of my laptop.

I have a coworker who’s going to be a dad soon. Whenever I’m working at the company and there’s someone new having a child, I seem to come up with something. Well, it’s only happened twice so far (while I’m employed, don’t really have time to come up with gifts when I’m in school and not finding out that people are going to have kids until like a month after it’s occurred). I’m currently in the process of designing a baby hat for a coworker’s soon-to-be-born baby. I’m not sure how well it’s going to go, last time I made a baby hat it was way too big! But hopefully it’ll fit (or just be a little bit too big). I’m not sure how it’s going to look yet, I have a bunch of drawings done so far. I’m torn between a bear, a monkey and a frog for the design. I don’t really have appropriate colours for any of them, so I’d be buying new yarn regardless (also, I do have appropriate colours for one of them, but it’s not machine washable and I think it’d be a good idea to use washing machine-friendly yarn, especially for something for a baby!). So that’s the baby hat that I’m going to be making soon. I’ll probably go shopping for yarn colours on Saturday, maybe.
